Frequently Asked Questions about action against hunger | acf tv spot, 'paper'

Action Against Hunger (French: Action Contre La Faim - ACF) is a global humanitarian organization which originated in France and is committed to ending world hunger. The organization helps malnourished children and provides communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger.

For almost 40 years, we have led the global fight against hunger across nearly 50 countries. We save children's' lives and work with their communities before and after a disaster. We empower people to provide for themselves, see their children grow up strong, and build prosperous communities.

We transform the lives of millions of people in some of the world's hardest-to-reach places. We also help communities respond to natural disasters and support people affected by conflict. Our work is supported by offices in the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, USA and Canada.

On November 15, 1979, a group of French academics, scientists, and doctors banded together to create a better way to deal with hunger. They established Action Contre La Faim – the world's first and only NGO exclusively focused on eradicating hunger and malnutrition.

Hunger and malnutrition mean less productive individuals, who are more prone to disease and thus often unable to earn more and improve their livelihoods. There are nearly 800 million people who suffer from hunger worldwide, the vast major- ity in developing countries. How many people go hungry?

Persistent instability due to adverse climate events, conflict and economic slowdowns all contribute to food insecurity. Although the majority of people suffering from extreme hunger are living in developing countries, the main cause of hunger around the world is poverty.

The world produces enough food to feed everyone on the planet. The problem is access and availability, both of which are disrupted by things like extreme weather, food waste, one's gender and – worst of all – conflict. Ending hunger is the greatest challenge of our time, but together it's solvable.

Our programs are based on an innovative, holistic approach, which empower women and men living in rural communities to become agents of their own development and make sustainable progress in hunger and poverty reduction. Trained community leaders, known as animators, in turn train their fellow community members.

From droughts to floods, in conflict zones and transitioning political situations, food is often the most immediate need. When everyday access to food, wages and market systems are destroyed in the wake of emergencies, Rise Against Hunger works through a network of in-country partners to address these needs.

When and why did Action Against Hunger start? Action Against Hunger was founded in France as Action Contre La Faim in 1979 by a group of French intellectuals who wanted to help fight hunger and save lives in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The organization was founded by Ray Buchanan in 1998, originally under the name Stop Hunger Now, with the goals of providing food and aid to people in need around the world and responding to disasters.
